The people of Somalia have suffered immensely over the past two decades; drought, famine and an escalation in armed conflict have only contributed to making a bad situation worse. HIJRA is working to care for and ensure the survival of the most vulnerable in Somali society: The Internally Displaced.
Large numbers of Internally Displaced families in Somalia are enduring the indignity of living without access to safe, clean water for washing, drinking and cooking. Hundreds of thousands are settled in crowded camps living in tiny make-shift shelters in the absence of proper waste disposal facilities and hygiene practice. Our Water & Sanitation activities conducted in partnership with OXFAM GB are providing for the water and sanitation needs of close to 281,000 persons on a daily basis.
Recent reports indicate that about half of Somalia's population is totally dependent on external food aid. Hostile weather conditions and decades of violent conflict have left many destitute. HIJRA is rehabilitating the country’s agricultural infrastructure with the aim of bolstering food security and promoting self reliance for sustainable development.
Since the collapse of the Somali State and the onset of civil strife, there has been a large scale loss of life and personal property. Many displaced persons usually only manage to escape conflict zones with bare essentials on their backs; they have neither the means nor method of earning a living. HIJRA is creating new earning opportunities for the poorest of the poor.
Outbreaks of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD/Cholera) are a regular occurrence in Somalia with instances reported every year. The root causes are the consumption of contaminated water and poor hygiene practice. There has been a recent upsurge in the number of reported cases and deaths in the Mogadishu area; HIJRA is working to save the lives of children; the most vulnerable and at greatest risk of infection.
