Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid (HIJRA)
is a humanitarian and development organization that aims to positively contribute towards improving the living standards and conditions of those adversely affected by disasters and conflict in the Horn of Africa. Our founding roots are in Somalia; where the early 1990s witnessed the humanitarian crisis that followed the collapse of the Somali state in 1991. As a result, an assembly of men and women came together to forge a collective response to the disaster. HIJRA; migration (An Arabic term) was chosen to symbolize large population displacements. We started out by conducting emergency relief programs, which included free food distribution, food-for-work, and distribution of Non-Food-Items (NFIs) and the supply of clean water to the Internally Displaced. Our focus gradually shifted to short term development projects such as community based hygiene education, rural food security, agricultural credit and irrigation infrastructure.
We have a long list of successfully implemented programs to our credit; this we attribute partly to our culture of establishing, developing and nurturing lasting relationships and partnerships with community leaders, local authorities, international aid agencies and other stakeholders with the aim of delivering relevant, timely and effective humanitarian programs.
